How to Choose Your Mas Band for Trinidad Carnival

First, what a mas band actually is
To "play mas" (short for masquerade) on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, you join a band. For Carnival 2027 those main days are Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February.1 A band designs a presentation, splits it into sections with their own costumes, registers masqueraders, and then puts the whole thing on the road: music trucks, drinks, food, security and the moment you cross the stage.
Every band does this differently, and that is the decision in front of you. A band is not just a costume. It is the crowd you will spend two long, sweaty, joyful days with, the music you will hear, and how looked-after you feel at 4pm on Carnival Tuesday when your feet start to complain. Here is how to choose well.
Step 1: Decide what kind of Carnival you want
All-inclusive pretty mas. This is the experience most first-timers picture: bikini-and-feathers or decorated board-shorts costumes, plus a package of drinks, food and services on the road. TRIBE's package is a good benchmark. It lists premium mobile bars with unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on both days, lunch at a rest park on Monday and Tuesday, breakfast and snacks on Tuesday, local and international soca DJs, a private security team, on-site paramedics, mobile restrooms and roaming photographers.2
Creative and competition mas. Some bands put the artistry of the presentation first and compete hard for Band of the Year. In 2026 The Lost Tribe's "Island Circus" topped the Uptown Carnival Improvement Committee large-band category with 233 points, ahead of Trinidad All Stars' "Sailors Ashore In Japan" and Paparazzi. In the medium category, Image Nation won with "Kaiso Kaiso", followed by Exousia and K2K Alliance & Partners.3 If you care about telling a story with your costume, look at who places well.
Traditional mas. Trinidad All Stars' second place with a sailor portrayal is a reminder that traditional characters are still very much alive on the road. Read our guide to traditional mas characters if that history excites you.
J'ouvert. J'ouvert is a separate pre-dawn street party that opens Carnival Monday, with mud, paint, powder and oil instead of feathers. It has its own bands and packages. J'ouvert Jumbeez, for example, sells all-inclusive packages that must be bought in full, with T-shirts and monokinis made to order.4 Many visitors do one J'ouvert band and one pretty mas band. Start with our J'ouvert explainer.
Step 2: Set your budget and read what is included
Prices for Carnival 2027 are already published by the big bands, with US dollar equivalents alongside. Here are some real examples from their section pages, checked on 3 October 2026:5,6,7,8
| Band | Example costume | Price | Drinks included? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harts | Revel (male) | TT$4,395 (US$703) | No, add the FIRE drinks package for TT$895 (US$143) |
| Harts | Polaris | TT$4,995 (US$800) | No, as above |
| The Lost Tribe | Jahara (fan) | TT$7,395 (US$1,183) | Yes |
| TRIBE | Pyra (female) | TT$7,595 (US$1,215) | Yes |
| Bliss | Luna Rossa (female) | TT$7,595 (US$1,215) | Yes |
TRIBE, Bliss and The Lost Tribe all list unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from mobile or roaming bars on Carnival Monday and Tuesday as part of the road package.2,9,10 Harts sells its drinks option separately.5 For price ranges across every section, see our band guides.
Two things move the price more than anything else. The first is the costume itself: feathered backpacks and headpieces cost extra. On TRIBE's Pyra section, a headpiece is TT$1,695 (US$271), and at Bliss a classic backpack is TT$1,200 (US$192).6,7 The second is what the package covers. Harts' drinks option is TT$895 (US$143) for its Fully Inclusive Road Experience or a private cart, or TT$400 (US$64) for a non-alcoholic student version.5 So compare like with like. For a full breakdown of what a Carnival trip costs, see How Much Does Trinidad Carnival Cost?.
Step 3: Look at the costumes properly
Do not choose from one Instagram photo. Every band publishes section pages with the designer, the photographer and, crucially, a list of what is included. Harts' Polaris package, for example, lists a branded hat, tank, pants, socks, headband, chest piece, belt, upper arms, lower arms and legs.5 TRIBE's female costumes offer a choice of decorated bikini, thong or high-waist bottoms.6
Think about comfort as well as looks. You may be on the road for ten hours or more on each day, in tropical sun. Heavy backpacks look spectacular when you cross the stage, but you carry them all day.
Sizing matters more than you might expect, because costumes are custom-made. The Lost Tribe says its costumes are made to the measurements verified at registration, and Harts says that once registration is complete you cannot change measurements or sizes.11,12 If you can, visit a showroom. The Lost Tribe runs a pop-up showroom at #59 Alberto Street, Woodbrook, open on weekday afternoons, with online galleries and a virtual showroom for everyone else.11
Step 4: Think about the vibe, the crew and the care
Who are you playing with? If you are travelling with friends, pick the same section so you get the same costume and stay together. Bigger bands mean bigger crowds and more energy. Smaller bands can feel friendlier and easier to navigate.
How does the band look after you? Look for clear details about security, medical cover, restrooms and rest stops. TRIBE, for example, puts mobile restrooms at the back of the band and runs a rest park for lunch on both days.2
Wristbands are not optional. At TRIBE and The Lost Tribe, you collect a wristband with your costume at distribution, and masqueraders without one will be removed from the band.13,11 That is part of how bands keep the road safe and fair for paying members.
Partners need their own costume. Harts says only paying masqueraders may jump in the band. Non-masqueraders can watch from the sidelines but cannot take part.12
Step 5: Register on time, through the right channel
Timing. Registration usually opens around the band launches in the middle of the year before Carnival. The Lost Tribe says registration runs through July and August until sold out.11 Popular sections can go quickly, so have a first and second choice ready.
Deposits. Expect to pay a downpayment to secure your costume, then the balance by the band's deadline. For Carnival 2027, TRIBE wants costumes paid in full by 30 November 2026 and The Lost Tribe by 31 December 2026, while Harts takes payments up to two weeks before distribution.13,11,12 The downpayments are:
- TRIBE: TT$2,500 (US$400) for all costumes, plus an extra downpayment for large or extra-large backpacks. All downpayments are non-refundable.13
- Harts: TT$2,000 (US$320), plus a 50% deposit on feathered add-ons over TT$2,000, or you can pay in full.12
- The Lost Tribe: TT$2,000 (US$320), due within five days of registration.11
Refunds. Assume your deposit is gone once you pay it. Harts spells it out: no refund of deposit, no switching sections and no changing measurements.12
Official channels only. TRIBE and The Lost Tribe both tell masqueraders to register only through official channels such as the mas camp, committee members or listed marketing affiliates, and TRIBE warns people not to be fooled by groups posing as its partners.13,11
Step 6: Plan for payments and costume distribution
A few practical details catch first-timers out, so check them before you commit.
How you will pay. TRIBE takes cash and LINX (Trinidad's local debit network) at its mas camp and Visa or Mastercard online, and it does not accept cheques.13 The Lost Tribe accepts Visa and Mastercard online, plus cash and local cards at its showroom.11 Harts takes final payments at its mas camp at 57 Alberto Street, Woodbrook, or through its online account system.12 If you are paying from abroad, ask your bank about foreign transaction fees.
When and how you collect. Costumes are handed out at distribution in the days before Carnival. At TRIBE you receive your costume package, a goody bag of Carnival essentials and your wristband, and the band runs a customer service line during distribution if something does not fit.13 If you cannot collect in person, Harts lets you add the name of a collection delegate to your online account so someone else can pick it up for you.12
Special requests. If your bra size is not listed, TRIBE lets you choose a "bring your own bra" option and the mas camp will contact you with instructions.13 TRIBE also notes that it does not release the designs of its male board shorts, souvenir vest and hat in advance, because male costumes are often copied.13
Mas camp hours. Mas camps are not open all hours. The Lost Tribe's is open Monday to Friday from 12pm to 6pm, with Saturday updates posted on social media.11 Plan any visits around that, especially if you arrive in Trinidad only a few days before Carnival.
Your quick checklist
- Decide: all-inclusive pretty mas, creative mas, traditional mas, J'ouvert, or a mix.
- Set a budget that includes upgrades and any separate drinks package.
- Read the full "what's included" list for your section, not just the photo.
- Check comfort, sizing and how much you will carry.
- Confirm security, medical, restroom and food arrangements.

Frequently asked questions
When does mas band registration open for Carnival 2027?
Most big bands open registration around their band launches in the middle of the year before Carnival. The Lost Tribe, for example, says its costume registration takes place in July and August before Carnival and continues until sections sell out. If you are reading this in October 2026, many popular sections may already be full, so check each band's registration page now.
Are mas band deposits refundable?
Usually not. TRIBE states that all costume downpayments (TT$2,500 or US$400) are non-refundable, and Harts says there is no refund of deposit, no switching of sections and no changing of measurements once registration is complete, because costumes are custom-made. Read the terms before you pay.
What does all-inclusive mean for a mas band?
It means more than a costume. TRIBE's package, for example, includes unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from mobile or roaming bars on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, lunch at a rest park on both days, breakfast and snacks on Tuesday, DJs, private security, paramedics, mobile restrooms and roaming photographers. Some bands, such as Harts, sell the drinks package as a separate add-on, so always check what your price covers.
Can my partner or friend walk with me in the band without a costume?
Generally no. Harts says only paying masqueraders can jump in the band, and non-masqueraders may watch from the sidelines but cannot participate. TRIBE and The Lost Tribe say masqueraders without their official wristband will be removed from the band.
Can I register for a mas band from overseas?
Yes. The big bands take registrations online. TRIBE and The Lost Tribe accept Visa and Mastercard online, and Harts lets you pay through its online account system. Always register through the band's official website, mas camp or listed committee members and affiliates, because bands warn about people posing as partners.
